Thoughts from the Week Before Easter, in 13 Haikus
I’m developing
A love hate relationship
With that “spring bunny”
That’s right: that bunny
You know, the Easter Bunny
And Santa Claus too
Love: collecting gifts
For my precious bambinos
Excuse to spoil them
Hate: He gets credit
Is this a conspiracy?
Starting to wonder.
Love: making magic
All the giddy excitement
For them and for me
Hate: He steals the show
Really— a conspiracy?
Beginning to think.
Women everywhere
Creating the memories
While He reaps benefit
And for professors
The two worst times of the year
December April
End of semesters
Work intense beyond reason
Fused with holiday
So we do it all
And he sweeps in last minute
To steal our glory
Isn’t it crazy?
Because actually we’re him
And yet we are not
But still it’s worth it
Because although now they don’t
Someday they will know
Plus, I do love them
Much more than my politics
So, I go with it.
Santa and the Easter Bunny always brought the practical stuff when I was growing up… Toothbrushes, socks, new underwear, etc. My parents always got credit for the big stuff, like the new bikes, etc. They worked so hard saving all year to get those big gifts, they were not going to let Santa or the Easter Bunny steal their thunder…
Brilliant — love this!
Beautifully written Heather! I especially like the lines
“Because actually we’re him
And yet we are not”
So deep! And this is a really succinct and poignant way of penning down your conflicting thoughts. What a gift you’re giving your children, not only the hard work you’re putting into making the magic happen but sharing & documenting your poetry talent here! The moment when your children realise the truth will inevitable be bittersweet but they will cherish all the efforts of the real Santa, Tooth Fairy, Candy Witch, Easter Bunny and so on.
Happy week before Easter!
-Kate
cute!
By the way, I am still super interested in hearing about your switch out of waldorf if you are able to share. Different types of education are so interesting to me…
Yes, will get to it as soon as the semester ends!
I am doing all the “first” holidays with my 3 year old son I adopted last fall. I often wonder why I am even playing in to all the fantasies, but I look at his excited little face and answer my own question. It is so silly, but it is a magical time that kids only get to experience for a short while.
Love this!
I am also interested in your switch of schools…if you can share I’d love to hear it! I am a teacher with 2 young kids always serarching for schools (they are 3 and 1)…so far we love Montessori for our daughter, but love to hear other perspectives about school from other parents. I know every child is different and different approaches work for different kids, but I am just curious!
Always love hearing what you have to say!
Also, Palm Sunday looked amazing! An awesome day! :)1
