NH Summer 2012: a Trip to the ER

M at ER

Meera got Swimmer’s Ear. Not surprising, given the little fish that she is, head underwater as soon as her feet hit the lake. After several complaints about her ear hurting, and a few rough nights of not being able to sleep without Children’s Motrin, we decided we better get her to a doctor. The only available Urgent Care option was the actual ER at the local hospital. Photo above shows her at rock bottom. But not to worry… after being bribed with “truffles” (Lindt chocolates), she obliged to the doctor’s prescription of twice-daily-ear-drops, and she promptly got back to her old self. Swimmers Ear. Now that’s real proof of some serious summertime fun. Still, though… our poor baby (anybody who’s ever had Swimmer’s Ear knows that’s some seriously painful stuff).

I know how she felt, having had swimmer’s ear many times myself but never since I’ve used a simple way to both avoid and cure it which, oddly, a lot of physicians don’t know. Immediately after swimming you combine 1/2 tsp white vinegar with 1/2 tsp rubbing alcohol in the ear. Let drain out. No side effects, non toxic, recommended by the Mayo Clinic, among others.

One of my son’s had ear tubes placed when he was a baby, and at the time we were given this amazing ear putty and super ear plugs that keep out all water. I made sure to get some extra plugs for the other 4 kids ( they all love swimming!) and thankfully it’s worked so far in preventing swimmer’s ear. I hope Meera feels better soon! I know that can’t be comfortable for her. Too funny that she is bribed with my favorite chocolate. :)
