Our 4 year old loves, loves, loves guiros! We have the wooden ones, made of the dried gourd. I can't play to save my life, but my uncle is great at giving lessons. With any luck, we'll have a musician (or at least musically inclined!) person in our little family.
Yes– we took a day trip to Catalina Island which was organized through a Haitian-run tour company outside of the resort. And, most importantly, we flew into Punta Cana– which was a 2 hour drive each way to/from the resort. So, during that drive each way– which was through the "real" DR– we saw a LOT.
She can't possibly get any cuter! And the boys look they've they've added inches overnight. What magnificent children!
Possibly slightly biased grandmother, Gail.

And the drums… well, you are brave souls
Looks like they are all having fun with those instruments! I was wondering if you had time to show the boys any other parts of DR besides the resort?
