Locks of Love (Meera’s Haircut)

For several weeks now Meera has been talking to me about wanting to get a haircut. She told me, repeatedly, that she wanted it short. It was hard for me to believe it (her long hair has always been such a huge part of her identity). But she was pretty insistent. And she was also clear that she wanted to do it before the first day of kindergarten. With a lump in my throat and a pit in my stomach I brought her to the hair salon today. She explained to her hair stylist exactly what she wanted. I just stood back (as hard as it was to do) and let it all happen. My only request was that Meera’s hair be given to Locks of Love. Meera is so happy with her haircut. She’s also so happy for whoever the little girl is out there who will someday be wearing a wig of hair that matches Meera’s (“We’ll be just like twins!” she said, many times, as I watched her long ponytail get cut right off). Oh my aching heart!

She looks adorable with short hair! My daughter is the opposite as she refuses to let me cut her hair. The long hair is beautiful but oh so much work !

I love how Meera knows what wants and when she wants it, at such a young age. I see that repeatedly when you write about her in your posts. I love that girl! Go Meera, you look so cute!! :)

So cute! And how great that you donated her hair-a girl somewhere will be very happy with that beautiful hair!
My daughter also stated at age five that s he wanted shorter hair. I also had to choke back tears as they cut her beautiful hair, but it turned out so cute and is a lot easier to manage!
    Love Meera’s new haircut!!

She looks lovely! My 4yo daughter asked to get her hair cut “short like Grandma’s” a few weeks back. I asked her several times if she was sure that’s what she wanted and explained that it wouldn’t be long again for many months, but she was sure. She chose a picture in a salon book that’s very similar Meera’s – a short, sassy little A-line bob. It turned out a little bit longer than Grandma’s and it completely suits her. I didn’t mind losing her long hair (and I really don’t mind losing the battles over hair brushing) but it makes her her look like an elementary school kid instead of my baby.

Happy First Day of Kindergarten Meera!

My daughter Serenity chose for her very first real haircut that the hair go to Locks of Love, so that is what we did! She was thrilled with the little thank you card they sent her. I will say she has never worn her hair that short again! She was 10 and is now 24 and will graduate from Columbia in December with her Masters in Russian Lit! Tell Meera I got tears in my eyes when I saw her darling pic!

  • Kate says:

Ohh so so beautiful Ms. M! So cool she’ll have a hair twin now and make another girl’s dream for a beautiful locks of blonde hair a reality — such a gift…I love the thought to donate to Locks of Love! Enjoy your new hair Meera!

Lump in the throat over here, too. Glad she was so positive throughout. And she looks great, although (?) certainly more of a Big Kid than before.
