Dominican Republic 2010 — 1 of 4

I’ll be honest: this past year has probably been the toughest yet for Braydon and I. We’ve been together for fifteen years and married for almost nine of those. We’ve had our ups and downs, our highs and our lows, better years and worse years. This past year has been very, very tough for us. We are 100% dedicated to sticking it out, but we’d be lying if we said these past several months have been easy. In so many respects, it has been very, very challenging for us. We knew we needed a break. Like, a real break. And we knew we needed it badly. But we also knew that we didn’t want to totally sacrifice our vacation with our bambinos in order for us to reconnect and rejuvenate as a couple. It is very hard (impossible?) to do what we wanted (needed?) to do with a baby along. We know that, first-hand, from prior experience. So, we came up with a plan: a trip with just the boys– leaving Meera at home with MorMor and MorFar. K & O are old enough, adventurous enough, and capable-and-experienced-travelers-enough to be able to afford us an awesome time. And Meera would be much happier (being the home-body that she is, at least for now) at home. It all hinged on MorMor and MorFar agreeing to come and stay with her while we went away. Which they did agree to do. What a gift from them. So, the grand plan got set in motion.

This year’s big May vacation was to the island of Hispaniola. The boys’ first time back to the island of their roots since we brought them home when they were eight months old. This was a big deal trip! We had hoped to bring them to Haiti this year, but the earthquake ended the possibility of that dream coming true. It took us a while to re-orient our minds to a new dream. But we did. And none of us are complaining. While we would have liked to have been able to bring K & O to Haiti, for us the Dominican Republic was the next best choice. It allowed for the boys to see a tiny bit (albeit a far cry from Cite Soleil) of the island on which they were born. They know and understand that the DR is not Haiti. But they also know and understand that the countries share one island. We saw enough of the reality of the DR for a bit of that to sink in. And we saw a lot of the beauty of the Caribbean, Hispaniola, and the Dominican Republic. All along our goal had been to expose them to enough, but to show them the breath-taking sheer brilliant beauty of it too. And, in the end, the trip was totally successful on all fronts. The boys came home thinking deeply– and they also came home proud of “their island,” “their people,” and “their place.” We were in La Romana, and we had done our research: not only is there great snorkeling there (K & O’s top priority for this trip), but a lot of Haitians live and work in that region. And we got to meet a lot of Haitian people who were very enthusiastic about bonding with our boys as soon as they found out they were Haitian too. “My brothers!” the Haitians would shout out to K & O, proudly proclaiming to the boys that they are “same colour!” and “same skin!” There were lots of questions, and lots of conversations all around. It was intense at times, but all good. And to top it all off, we had an absolutely fantastically fabulous vacation. Highlights (in addition to the Hispaniola/Haitian connections) included:

  • snorkeling snorkeling snorkeling! off the beach of the resort where we stayed, and during a day-trip we took to Catalina Island (a day trip which included a couple hours of riding in a tiny 12-foot out-board-motor boat on the open white-capped Caribbean ~~ very, very crazy, to say the least!!!). highlights of snorkeling included seeing a cow fish; underwater ‘meadows’ of huge sand dollars; humongous bright orange starfish; angel fish; sergeant major fish; parrot fish; surgeon fish; yellow tail; millions of sea urchins; and even an eel! Kyle and Owen are really good snorkelers. At age just-barely-six they are really, seriously, really, really super-good snorkelers. I don’t want to brag on them too much, but seriously, they are really good at snorkeling.
  • boating every day! paddle boat, kayaks, the above mentioned “speed boat,” and — the creme de la creme — an hour-long catamaran sail with Mama at the helm!
  • the boys’ first massages! no kidding. we all four had massages the first day. total, total indulgence. worth every single cent.
  • drinking and dining! turns out the boys love pina coladas (virgin ones, of course) almost as much as their parents do (the non-virgin ones, of course)! and we all loved eating lunch on a gorgeous terrace overlooking the water each day… and trying the various resort restaurants for dinner each night. Our favorite dinner spot was a restaurant called the “Jungle,” which was totally outdoors, in a mangrove area, in the sand on/by the beach. It served Dominican food and it was awesome. We ate conch, shrimp (Owen’s favorite), rice and beans (Kyle’s favorite), grouper, and goat. Caramelized banana and papaya for dessert. We ate there twice and those were heavenly evenings for all four of us. And drinking and dining out all vacation long meant no cooking and no cleaning for H & B. (this is big because it was our first trip since having kids that we have vacationed this way… it was glorious!!!)
  • no toys! We have always had a J-M policy that for any child 18-months-old or older, we bring no toys on vacation. None whatsoever. Period. This works out amazingly well, and none of our kids have ever blinked an eye at it (or even seemed to notice). One of the things Braydon and I love about vacations is watching to see what our kids do with nothing at all. It is amazing to see their creativity. One example from this trip was that K & O invented a way to play tic-tac-toe at the table using knives and salt/pepper packets. They wound up doing this during many a meal.
  • exploring exploring exploring! coral coastline and sandy beaches and flora and fauna for as far as the eyes can see = hours of endless adventure. playing with hermit crabs and all kinds of crabs were huge hits! looking for birds, fish, turtles, snails, coconuts, bananas…  it just doesn’t get any better.
  • lounging at the pool (we love that) and reading (for this trip we bought and brought with us the boys’ first real chapter book: The Swiss Family Robinson!!!).
  • going to bed late and waking up early! K & O were awesome. They were thrilled to stay up until 9 or 10 each night (way past their normal bedtime)! And their parents were thrilled to have them sleep in until 8 or 9 each morning (way past their normal wake-up time)!
  • the resort was gorgeous and lived up to all of our expectations. Braydon and I had been to the DR once before (before K & O were born), but we had gone to Punta Cana. That was a totally different experience than what we had in La Romana. La Romana was much more our speed– relatively off the beaten path, low-key, and very few Americans. A true break from reality in the best possible ways.
  • as usual for our family trips……. the best part of all: bonding bonding bonding. It was awesome to spend time together doing things that all four of us truly, genuinely love to do… and to do them TOGETHER. This trip did what we needed it to– it brought us back together and revived us to carry forward.

We came home to a very happy Meera. She was happy the whole time we were gone. MorMor and MorFar spoiled her rotten. And she was happy to see us when we got home.

Life is an adventure!

Meera’s week at home

By Guest Blogger: Mor Mor!!!

Meera Grace was a joy to be with for the week Heather and Braydon took Kyle and Owen on vacation to the Dominican Republic in May shortly after they turned 6. I really LOVED being able to have extended time with her. She and I bonded totally. We are forever buddies!

Don and I arrived in PA on Sunday at noon in order to make sure Meera was reacquainted with us. We had just spent some time with them all for the twin’s birthday so she was totally comfortable with us.  At 6 am Monday morning when she awoke and they were gone I explained (as I’d been told to say) that Mommy, Papi, Kyle and Owen were on a “Work Trip”. She understood totally I think, meaning that she knew they were away and would be back sometime. She didn’t ask for them or cry at all, she didn’t worry or stress at all – really. (A BIG relief for me!) Heather and Braydon had done a great job preparing her.

We had a fantastic week. Meera must have said 200 times on Monday, and 100 times on Tuesday, and 50 times on Wednesday, etc. “Hi MorMor” or “Hello MorMor” she was just checking in to make sure I was still there. I was the consistent one. Don had work to do and meetings to go to so he was in and out all week. Margie came 3 days and mostly helped out the J-M’s with cleaning projects she wanted to do. (What a gem she is!)

Some of our highlights were Garden Gate or as Meera calls it “Baby Day” at the Waldorf School on Monday morning.  Going to the playground at Peace Valley Park and the Bethlehem rail walk (where we’d hoped to go for long stroller walks but in reality she wouldn’t stay in the stroller for more than 15 minutes before wanting to get out), ice cream cones ( her first cone we found out later) at Owowcow where they make organic ice cream with all local dairy, fruits and honey, Rita’s custard ice cream with colored sprinkles (the sprinkles were also a first we also found out). There was lots of time with Meera outside jumping on the trampoline, sometimes naked (oh my!), playing in the sandbox, and the play house. Inside we listened to Lion King over and over on the CD player while she danced and with MorFar she’d sit for long stretches watching the Lion King on YouTube on his computer. Another favorite was gathering up her bathing suits and having me help her get as many as 4 on her at one time! She loves to read books and have them read to her. What a wonderful, sweet baby.

Meera’s favorite foods were strawberries, blueberries, bananas, pears, yogurt, chicken (balk-balk she calls it), and pasta. She asked for and drank lots of water. Never asked for juice or milk although she had a bottle of milk at nap and bedtime which put her right to sleep!

The week went by fast. Don left to pick the J-M’s up on Saturday evening and shortly after Meera went off to bed not knowing she’d see them all in the morning! Before I knew it Kyle and Owen were bounding in the door full of stories about their wonderful vacation trip. Their hugs and kisses felt so great! They looked like they’d grown 2 more inches! The vacation was all they’d hoped it would be. Monday morning seeing them all together again was beautiful. What a wonderful family. I feel so blessed. Life is great.

Happy Birthday Kyle and Owen!

The boys chose Carrabba’s for dinner. Their beloved penne with alfredo and then the whole waitstaff singing “Happy Birthday to You” with their dessert’s arrival. When we got home it was already past their bedtime. From their bathroom window, in the midst of brushing his teeth, Kyle saw it—  a full arc rainbow sitting right in our yard. We all ran downstairs and out the front door. And there it was. Just there for us. It was glorious. Truly glorious. Happy Birthday Kyle and Owen!!! We were all sure that it was their birthday gift sent straight from their birthmother.

K & O’s 6th Birthday End of Bed Presents

Posted by | BAMBINOS | 2 Comments

5:43 a.m. May 8, 2010. My boys have the whole house up-and-going, and they are opening their end-of-bed-presents. Never in my life did I imagine that Braydon and I would be giving our children “toy soldiers” (in quotes because Kyle actually insists that we all refer to them as “model knights”)… but, here we are. They are obsessed with Alexander Nevsky (the music and the story — as told by their Papi; they don’t even know that a film exists), Teutonic Knights, the Russians vs. the Germans, etc., etc., etc.  Seriously obsessed. And this has been going on for well over a year now. So, today, for their sixth birthday, much to their utter surprise (they had not asked for anything in particular for their birthday present), they got toys to let their imaginations run wild. It was a beautiful sight to see them play and play and play today with their 6th Birthday End of Bed Presents. Owen is also currently obsessed with magic. So they got a few “magic coins” too— much to the delight of our Owen. At one point this morning, while Owen was performing magic coin tricks for his Papi, Kyle soaked up his “model knights.” Sitting in his bedroom watching him play, he said to me, “Mommy, I just love to stare at them! This is the most perfect birthday present ever!” What a special day. For us all.

Food Friday: The Best 6th Birthday Treat Ever

Posted by | FOOD | 3 Comments

In Waldorf Schools, the kindergarten birthdays are very special. Great care is given to the celebrating of them. We had Kyle and Owen’s “school birthdays” on Tuesday. Since they are in two separate classrooms, we had two separate celebrations. Braydon and I were there the entire morning (crazy!). One of the things that happens during the “school birthday” is that the child’s parents are asked to bring in a special treat for the class. Typically people bring a cake, or cookies, or brownies, or something special to the child. Kyle and Owen are not huge sweets/desserts fans. There are a couple of specific things they love (whipped cream, for example! –and– Owen only: frosting!), but they don’t really have a favorite dessert. They love fruit. They love ginger cookies (although they associate them with fall and/or Christmas). Kyle loves fig newtons and Owen loves chocolate chip cookies. But I wanted it to be really special. I was kind of stumped as to what to bring in this year. In the past I’ve always brought store-bought cupcakes for their school and daycare birthday celebrations. But this year I really wanted to bring something homemade– the boys are old enough now to ‘get it’ and to appreciate something truly good and special and made-with-love-by-their-mama. I discussed it with them several times, but we couldn’t come up with anything that they really wanted. Owen finally declared that he wanted a “cake with lots of frosting with no cake inside it” (i.e., a big pot of frosting!!!!!!!!!!) LOL!!! But I knew that wouldn’t go over well with the teachers. 😉 And I also know that Owen is actually very picky about his frosting. So, I set out to create the best 6th Birthday Treat Ever. And, boy, did I ever!!! Seriously… it was incredible. Two classrooms of kids ages 4-7 and not one child didn’t love this. Kids were begging for seconds and thirds. We witnessed more than one child literally licking their plates (and that doesn’t even include Owen, who regularly licks his plate). The teachers told me it was the biggest hit ever– they’ve never seen the kids in their classes love a birthday treat so. I highly recommend this whole spread for any occasion… but if you’ve got little kids to charm… this is the way to do it!!!! Make it and you will not be disappointed! I cannot rave enough about this (and neither can Kyle and Owen). By the end of that day Tuesday we had nothing— nothing!– left! Nada! And believe me, we started out with a lot that morning! (Braydon and I made all of it the night before)…

Kyle and Owen’s 6th Birthday Treat — the Best Ever!!!

Pound Cake, Strawberries, Buttercream Frosting, and Whipped Cream

Owen loves buttercream frosting and they both love whipped cream. I made both for both classes. I had everything in separate containers so that kids could pick and choose their toppings for their cake. Some chose just strawberries, many chose either the buttercream or the whipped cream, but most chose to load it up with it all. Everybody left happy!

POUND CAKE

I got this recipe from the foodie blog Black Girl Chef’s Whites (a great food blog). I altered it only a tiny bit (using fresh lemon juice instead of lemon extract; omitting the glaze/frosting that she calls for; and using two large pound cake pans instead of one large angel-food-style-pan).

1  lb butter, room temperature

3 cups sugar

6 large eggs, room temperature

4 cups flour, sifted

3/4 cup milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp fresh lemon juice

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Butter and flour two pound cake style baking pans.

In electric mixer cream butter and sugar.  Add eggs one at a time, beat until incorporated.  Add flour and milk alternately, ending with the flour.  Add vanilla and lemon, beat well, making sure to scrape down bowl as needed.

Pour batter evenly into prepared pans, bake for about 1 hour or until pick inserted in cake comes out clean.  Cool in pan on rack for 30 minutes, then remove cake from pan. Let cool completely before storing in airtight container until serving.

STRAWBERRIES

Cut up, or slice, fresh strawberries (I used five pounds of strawberries total for the two classrooms). Sprinkle with sugar. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

I doubled this recipe.

1/2 cup butter, softened

4-1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar

1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

5-6 tablespoons milk

In a large bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Add in sugar, vanilla, and milk. Beat until light and fluffy. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Bring to room temperature before serving.

WHIPPED CREAM

This was Braydon’s contribution. He’s the best whipped cream maker ever. He doubled this recipe.

In mixer, whip together 1 pint heavy whipping cream, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Beat until desired consistency. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

P.S. Meera loved it too! She could not stop taste-testing it the morning of their school birthdays!

And, yes, I am crazy for doing this kind of stuff for my kids. I know that. And yes, we were up ’till all hours on Monday night making all this stuff (although that [the up late working our tails off part] is not unusual). When they were 3 or 4 or 5 it wouldn’t have been worth it (they wouldn’t have appreciated it), but we’re raising quite the little foodies here and they are now old enough to truly appreciate these things–  it was so, so, so worth it!!!

Another Big Milestone for Owen

Posted by | BAMBINOS | 6 Comments

Kyle and Owen were not easy to potty train. I never worried about it though. It just was not something I was willing to allow myself to stress over. They were in diapers until they were three. And even after they were out of diapers they still weren’t night-time-potty-trained—- not even close. They always had to wear a pull-up to bed. A few weeks before Meera was due to be born, as the boys approached their fourth birthday, Braydon and I did a push for night-time-potty-training. We were thinking that with a new baby coming it would really, really, really nice to have the boys completely out of diapers. Kyle cooperated. He was ready, and motivated. Our ‘thing’ was that if he could wake up with a dry pull-up for three nights in a row, then he could try sleeping with no pull-up. It wasn’t long after our big push that Kyle was fully night-time-potty-training. Owen, on the other hand, was a whole different story. He had absolutely no interest whatsoever in night-time-potty-training, and he had absolutely zero motivation to go for it. He would tell us openly that he thought pull-ups were “great” and he seriously questioned why anyone would choose to get up in the night to pee on the potty when you could just stay in bed and pee in your pull-up. It made no difference to him to know that Kyle wasn’t wearing a pull-up any longer. It made no difference to him to know that most kids his age weren’t wearing pull-ups any longer. None of that mattered. He happily wore his pull-up to bed every night for a full two years after his brother had stopped. And he’d happily wake up every single morning with a soaking wet, heavy-with-pee-filled pull-up. He has a mind of his own. But then, suddenly, out of the blue, about three weeks ago, Owen announced to us that he was going to “stop wearing pull-ups by the time he turned six.” We were all overjoyed– and flabbergasted. With Kyle and his parents cheering him on with gusto, and with us committing to waking him up to pee each night before we go to bed, Owen determined to go for it. Three times he got to ‘2’ (2 dry pull-ups in a row), but then crashed and burned on the third night… sending him right back to 1. He got frustrated with himself, but he didn’t give up. And then, just last week, he did it. 3 nights in a row with a dry pull-up. And then, for the first time in his life, he got to go to bed pull-up-free. With Kyle there were many accidents in the first few days/weeks/months of pull-up-free nights. So, we were fully anticipating lots of laundry and making-of-beds. But no. Owen has been pull-up-free for the past week and has not had one accident. Not even close. Owen is officially 100% potty trained day-and-night. Just in the nick of time too (for his own self-imposed deadline)—  as he is just about to turn six. A big deal for Owen (and the whole family)! And I am so, so glad that I didn’t ever let myself get stressed over the whole thing. I truly believe it to be true (at least with my boys), that when they are ready, they are ready. No point in rushing them. For whatever it may be.
